The Renewable Revolution in the automotive and energy sectors is demanding raw mineral extraction at rates exceeding what machine-driven mining alone can deliver. Backed by Canada’s Technology Supercluster, our consortium-led project is revolutionizing the mining industry by looking for solutions to mining’s biggest challenges in their tiniest microenvironments - their microbial communities.

We are working with our consortium partners to develop the Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (M-MAP), an online platform with the potential to accelerate the development of eagerly-awaited microbial solutions for mining. Our team is working to extract key information about microbial communities from mining-related environments, in order to understand “who” is there and “what” they are doing. 

Microbiome analytics will enable the implementation of state-of-the-art environmental practices across the mining lifecycle: a “green” approach to resource extraction and mine site remediation that promises to significantly reduce, and ultimately eliminate the use of toxic chemicals, develop more efficient mining practices, and greatly reduce the possibility of adverse environmental impacts. With funding support from Canada’sTechnology Supercluster and consortium partners, M-MAP represents the largest investment in planned natural resource genomic bioinformatics in the history of the sector.
